I am searching, for my biological father. He was a British Major, stationed in or about, Salzgitter Bad, Germany, during 1949. Any information, regarding the English Zone, would be greatly appreciated.

  2. I've used British military records when tracing my family history and unfortunately the only ones that you can currently get online (via ancestry.co.uk) are for WW1, and even then they are incomplete as 2/3 of the records were destroyed in the Blitz.

My grandfather served in the army during the war and was stationed in Germany for 8 years afterwards (as I'm assuming your father was) and we once enquired, out of curiosity, whether or not we could get hold of his army records.  We were told that only my grandfather himself or his next of kin could see his records.  It might be worth writing to the Home Office (if you google it I'm sure it will bring up an address) and explaining the situation.  They might be able to give you a list of all of the people of that rank stationed in that area at that time even if they don't let you see any records.

  3. Try the National Archive http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/milit...

If they can't help you they'll know who can but I'm pretty sure they will help you.
