from naders website, "The federal government should maintain its commitment to affirmative action -- even though such arrangements may violate the rules of the World Trade Organization binding on the US." ( http://www.votenader.org/issues/social/affirmative-action/ )

  1. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that what the WTO does is to guarantee the opportunity to have a market-- ie. this is how UPS was able to sue the Canadian National Post because it was too efficient. Affirmative Action is a mechanism designed to help the historically disenfranchised underbelly get ahead. Therefore, in theory the WTO does oppose affirmative action, ie. Say that in Saint Lucia bananas are one of the highest exported national products and basically provide for a large extent of Saint Lucian GNP, the WTO allows for any other company to make their market in Saint Lucia. So Del Monte (which I believe is ran out of Hawaii) is allowed to sell bananas in Saint Lucia at relatively more affordable prices. The average Saint Lucian, in order to save money, will buy Del Monte ones, in turn disenfranchising Saint Lucia's own national product, making the country poorer. In this sense, the WTO completely opposes affirmative action as it supports capitalistic gain above all else.

  2. I agree with you.
