Question:

Does the absence of a full size spare tyre affects your decision when choosing a new car?

Apparently "space saver" or temporary spare tyres and run-flat tyres are not recommended by motoring organisations here in Australia (e.g. NRMA, RAC, etc.) because they're usually speed limited to 80km/h and only last for 150-400km (which is especially bad if you're in the outback since service stations are hard to come by - apparently not as much of a problem in Europe). Also they severely decrease your car's braking performance.

The advantage over full size spares though is apparently cars can get slightly better fuel economy with the few kilos less weight (although this is debatable) and of course they give you more boot space.

My question is, with this information, would you still buy a car without a full size spare (considering many cars nowadays come with one by default)?

  3. Not at all. As long as a mini spare is properly inflated it will get me to the nearest tire store for a fix or replacement. If I lived in an isolated area I would just throw out the mini spare and put a full sizer in the trunk. NO PROBLEM.

  4. I have flats so seldom any more that I would not give it a second thought.  Maybe in the outback its important, but here you cannot go 50 miles without a service station,
