  1. i absolutely agree, its AFL now not VFL any more and they have to come to terms with that. WAFL is for western Australia, SANFL for south Australia, VFL for Victoria etc. AFL should have 2 teams in W.A, S.A, Vic, NSW, QLD and 1 in tassie and northern territory! its time to cut down the teams, Victoria will also be the home of football we all know that (west coast and fremantle grand final will be played in the other side of the country, when it 7 years time w.a will have a bigger and better stadium, but Ive come to terms with that) the Vic's can still support their teams but when they go down and play in the VFL. I'm being reasonable it's Australian game and it should be fair, they will get over it later, just get the rivalry between states stronger, this will improve when its not Melbourne teams vs Melbourne teams.

    just my opinion.

  2. This is a really tough question to answer. On the one hand, you have got a couple of  the older,  ex vfl clubs struggling to survive. Does the AFL keep pumping good money after bad (ie will these clubs come back for more money in, say, 5 years time when they are in the financial crapper again) or do they look to either moving a couple of existing teams - understandably this is not a popular option amongst the masses -  or creating new teams and let the strugglers just disappear into the sunset. If it were my team, I would hope that I would be happy for them to move somewhere and at least remain as part of the comp. (Guess I can't really answer that one as WC are pretty secure - for now...)

Firstly, why are these clubs struggling financially? Poor management, lack of members, inability to attract and retain quality sponsors.... Some of these things are fixable so they can't go wrong again but some other things, maybe not.

I guess the heart says keep the old teams, help them to survive but the head thinks this is just not a viable option and things must move forwards in order for the AFL to remain the superior football code in Oz

  3. kinda reminds me of the baseball in america, where they have the "Word Series" and the only teams that play in it, are from USA (and one from canada? i dunno, baseball sucks anyway)

and with the AFL, the AUSTRALIAN football league, there are no teams in Tasmania, Northern Territory or Canberra.

Instead, they have 10 teams from one of the smallest states in the country, and then a total of 6 teams scattered from other states.

Hardly the AFL, its more like the VFL... stupid victorians....

  4. **Personally I don't think that the AFL does needs anymore teams in the competition at the moment but it'll eventually happen and there's not much anyone can do about it.**

  5. i think (being a qlder and not liking most vic teams) having 2 more interstate teams is a good idea coz now there will be 10 from vic and 10 from other states..

except i dont think they have chosen very good locations 4 the teams... especially west sydney.

i agree with lozz..magpie girl about NT and tassie coz i believe they will get a really strong following in those states (possibly not tassie)

also.. the 10 from vic and 10 from everywhere else could bring in another tradition game where (like the Vic v Dream team this year) every vic team plays against a team from interstate... that would be like a vic vs dream team game only there would be 5 of them! and every player could experience it!

  6. ye i agree!!!!

there should be 2 teams for each state and territory!

    wa- frem & wce

    sa- port & adel

    nt- 2 new teams

qld- bris & the gold coast team

nsw- syd & the west sydney team

    act- 2 new teams

vic- keep the original 2 teams: geel n melb

perhaps move st.k and haw to tazzie as they play in launceston

this way no-one cn complain apart from the vics... which isnt anythin to worry bout hahaha, n each state/ territory cn hav a rivalry match like the western derby or the showdown in sa

  7. The AFL doesn't need two more teams, it needs to focus on helping out current clubs who are struggling. By bringing in two more clubs, (especially in the areas they have chosen), the AFL is going to have big problems. They will have to support the two new teams, while trying to help traditional clubs. Then no teams will be left in the comp! They're making a mistake.

And if the AFL really wants to expand, they should do it in Tassie and NT, not the rugby dominated states.

  8. I am not buying into the state v state thing, however I think that to have a fair national comp, all states should be represented according to population. Therefore there would still be more teams in Victoria but not as many as there are now. Tasmania should have a team given that they are one of the founding states of the sport and if you have ever been there you will know that most Tasmanians live and breathe Aussie Rules Football. I am not sure about the territories, but I have seen some remarkable players come out of the NT.

The real problem that the AFL is facing is the one where they took the previously existing VFL and remoulded it. Ideally, they would have started the AFL from scratch and perhaps invited 2 or 3 of the strongest teams in Victoria to join or even started new teams and combined better players from the existing VFL sides. It is great that we have what we consider to be a national comp but please have some respect for the Victorian players and fans who didnt have a hand in the demise of their original VFL. You must remember that they have lost something which they considered to be theirs and that they have been relatively quiet and fair when it came to the overhaul and including new interstate teams.

I think that the future will bring even more changes and perhaps even the demise of some original VFL teams which is sad and unfortunate for those fans, so be grateful if you support a strong interstate team. Things are going your way.

  9. No they should not bring in 2 new teams. the afl is only doing it for the money

i think that the ideal competition would be 14 teams, 26 rounds and no NAB cup, but this is not going to happen.

everybody would play each other twice, home and away and it would make it a fairer competition that the one we currently have now.

but this will never happen, which 2 clubs do u stop? and the afl will not play one less game a week becoz that means losing more money

the 2 new teams will struggle for a while. im not a fan of the expansion

  10. i dont think they need more teams. But if they do have 2 more teams, 1 team must come from Tasmania! Sydney already has a team but they dont need another one. Gold Coast- great! but the other should come from Tasmania!

  11. and why shouldnt it be run by victoria??

it has been ran from victoria for the last 150 years!! the game is BOOMING and we need to cater for it!

look at england\ and their soccer. They have 20 teams in their premier league AND there is also another 20 or so leagues under that!! And that is in a country that it 10 times smaller than ours.

Yeah, some teams are in a bit of money woes...but now its time for the public to stand up, follow the established teams as well as the two new teams coming in the next few years.

Although I dont think that the AFL is a national comp until there is one team in every state and territory.....lets be the first sport in australia to have at least one team in QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS, SA, WA and the NT and make it TRULY NATIONAL!

  12. Yea 1 in Alice Springs or Darwin and 1 in Hobart. That would make it a trully national competition

  13. god NO

    2 more interstaters

even the refs will get confused who to favour when they play each other

Melbourne club are real footy teams

  14. the afl needs a team in tassie. end of story.

I think its a joke that their setting up teams in gold coast and w.sydney. One team each in QLD and NSW is enough. The AFL needs to take care of the teams that are already in the comp before they even think about bringing another team in.

These new teams will be another major stuff-up for demetriou and his cronies.

  15. The AFL does NOT need another team in Queensland. I'm not really enjoying the idea of having another team in the comp but I think instead of wasting the money on a rugby-orientated state, the AFL should invest in making a new team down in Tasmania.

Tasmania are dedicated footy fans but are only able to see a couple of matches per season.

Victoria don't need another team nor do Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia or Sydney but Tassie need to be able to support a home grown team.

  16. unfortunately???!!!!

like sa or wa could run it better, youre just bitter because only 1 team from sa or wa is even close to making the finals this yr and even they might not make it

.........and vic have the most clubs

anyway.....to the previous poster, west coast vs fremantle grand final

    hahahahhahahahahahahahhaha............

    omfg u r hilarious

    f-ckin dream on mate

it will be at least 100 years before that happens

well all be six feet under

  17. first of all, the ***** with 'Go Eagles' in her name that said only victorian teams are real footy teams is obviously mentally retarded, as youd expect from an eagles fan.

secondly, whoever said adding 2 more teams would make it 10 and 10, go back to primary school maths please.

    16+2 does not equal 20

i also agree tassie and NT would be a better choice. that way it wouldnt be just freo who have to head down to tassie like twice a year.

oh and btw, person 2 or so comments above me, in 2006 fremantle were about 4 or 5 goals away from a WCEvFD grand final.

    dumbshit

  18. It has 16 teams.

It needs 16 teams to maintain the quality distribution of players. More teams means the quality players are spread over more game time....not good.

A few of the current teams, particularly Vic teams, need to be replaced by stronger clubs.

  19. I don't know about two more teams - but it needs to relocate two teams to new sites in Qld & NSW.

The sooner a couple of the useless Melbourne based teams fold or relocate the better.

They are a drain on the league & the administrartion are obviously aware of that fact & are trying to do something about it.

  20. The AFL has stuffed up !   They run the comp, but didn't have the " balls " to foot both NORTH and the BULLDOGS out of Victoria, to Gold Coast and West Sydney.    Both are sepperated by about 5K along Dynon Rd, West Melbourne, meaning  there is too many clubs to close to each other in Victoria.   The AFL , allowing new teams in , will help them establish and prosper, while North in time will roo the day they voted not move, and eventually in years to come will fold, and the AFL will just simply say , sorry we can't help you!

  21. No but if there are they should be a Gold Coast team and a Tasmanian team. I f the AFL say they are going to expand the comp then make a team in Tasmania.
