Question:

Does the amount of money provided by FAFSA depend on which school you go to?

I've gone to a community college for 2 years and have had everything paid for by this grant from FAFSA.. even ended up with a few thousands extra. I've applied to UNT for Fall and noticed the amount went up to about $17,000.. so that I still will have a few thousand extra after everythings paid for. So if I chose to go to a more costlier school such as Texas Christian University, would the FAFSA provide me with enough money to pay for my tuition (not living on campus), even though it's more in the $30k range?

  1. This information is found on the FAFSA website under FAQ's.

How much financial aid am I eligible to receive?

Your eligibility for aid depends on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), your year in school, your enrollment status, and the cost of attendance at the school you will be attending. Your school’s financial aid office will tell you how much you can receive.

For more information on eligibility, visit the financial aid office at your school or look at “Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid” at studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/...

  2. The financial aid generally goes up as the school you're interested in gets more expensive, but it's not going to cover your expense for every school out there.

There isn't money for everybody to go to whatever school they want to.

  3. I don't think so unless it is graudate work (MD, JD, PH D). Hint: always put on your fafsa app that you plan on living on campus and you will get more money to pay for a dorm. But you can still live off campus and you'll get a bigger refund to help with $ throughout the semester. There is no fafsa police that is going to see if your living on campus or not but you will have to eventually pay it back.

  4. Not really but it might have changed

  5. well fafsa takes into account how much your tuition, fees, room. and board will cost. then they take that number and subtract from it your expected family contribution (efc). it really depends on your financial situation if fafsa will cover everything or not. but if you've had everything paid for at CC i'd imagine you'd have everything paid for at university as well. it shouldn't matter what the tuition costs since fafsa is needs based.

  6. Talk to a financial aid counselor at UNT, they can answer all your questions and will gladly help you.
