Does the cast on count as the first row of knitting?

I am learning to knit and trying to learn to count rows. If I cast on using the sling shot method does it count as my firs row of knit or does the knit start after that?

Sometimes I think I like crochet better. (I've crochet for 30+ years, and I've been knitting 2 weeks!)

  1. No, the cast on doesn't count as the first row.

I'm trying to learn crochet and I'm having the same feelings as you.  I've been telling myself it will get easier.  When I first started knitting, it was awkward until I got the hang of it.  I have to give myself a pep talk to keep at it.

  2. I have found that although they are both considered yarn crafts they are two different animals.:)  I love to crochet and I like to knit.  Now I enjoy using both in one project.  I will knit the middle of a baby blanket and crochet granny squares to use to make a border around the outside.  Just give yourself time, it is a good thing to challenge yourself, keeps things interesting.

  3. The first row is not counted.

It's natural you like something better that you're more comfortable with.  I've been knitting since I was 7 years old and crocheting since I was 15.  I've made hundreds of things using both methods, and I like knitting better.  I learned it first, what can I say?

  4. the cast on doesnt count as a row, but with the long tail or sling shot you cast on and knit your first row.

  5. I haven't seen a pattern where the cast on row is a counted row. The next row just as in crochet is row or round 1.

I do like crochet better. I do both and some tatting. And I definitely like the crochet better.

Learning to knit sox is the pits!! having problems turning the heels without holes in them!!

  6. I started knitting in my thirties and have crocheted since my teens and I have always preferred it.  I found that once I had established a comfortable way to hold the needles, I really enjoyed knitting and wanted to learn more.  The cast on row is just that and the first row is the one you knit in pattern . I liked going to the library to check out the knitting books and finally bought one of my own to refer to. I always mark the right side with a piece of yarn as it made it easier to see.

    Don't give up.  Happy knitting!
