  1. it doesn't necessarily mean this, but i guarantee that if you look at the statistics that there is a direct correlation between size of fish caught and distance from the shore.

  2. No this is a common misconception with people who are new to fishing or listen to people who know nothing about it.  Many species in Southern California such as Halibut, Corbina and other live quite close to shore and come in close to spawn or eat.  Since you are in new your it would be flounder or stripped bass, but you get the idea.  The fish can be anywhere, the trick is to find them, know what they like to eat and know when they are there.  good luck.

  3. pixt is right, they move in closer to spawn and eat.... find out where there food is they will probably move in the evening. They don't stay in one spot all day... unless they are big enough that they cant move lol.

  4. believe most everyone hit on it...

Remember big fish eat little ones - normally small ones are close to shore....or close to the surface...

Fish generally go to deeper water if the water is too warm or too cold for them or to avoid predators such as man....

  5. All the above are correct. I have caught huge snook on a pier fishing the shallower end by the beach. The end of the pier is usually for those looking for pelagics or seasonal fish. Just keep your eyes open and see who's catching what and where. Find a spot nearby and go from there. Also ask the"pier rats" ( local anglers who frequent the pier) for a little help, most are more than happy to share the knowledge.~Good luck catchin'.

p.s., Sorry, I don't know of any piers around Brooklyn. Do a google and see what pops up.

  6. Most people think that because your further out, its mostly true that you could catch bigger, but if you have a boat, i would go further out into deeper water because thats where most of them are going to be.

  7. not at all when i was little i used to always get yelled at for casting under the dock but i would always end up catching the bigger fish
