  1. Yes Red Rum

  2. In the last hundred years only 11 favourites have actually won the National. Horses starting at 16-1 or under have the best record at 27 wins since 1968. In the last 25 years there have been a few long odd surprises; Last Suspect at 50/1, Royal Athlete and Ben Nevis both at 40/1, Red Marauder at 33-1, Maori Venture and Little Polveir both at 28/1 and Rubstic at 25/1. These long shots winners are what the National is all about, most people are happy to stick a couple of quid 'each way' on a 25-1 shot and sit back and enjoy the race. Many serious gamblers will not put any money on horses in the National as it is too difficult to pick a winner, but this luck factor only adds to the excitement for the millions of people whos only gamble is once a year on the Grand National.
