Does the following dialog sound awkward? "How's school nowadays?" "OK. I am having mid-term exams soon."?

I especially want to know whether or not the way I used the word "nowadays" sounds awkward to native speakers of English.

It sounds okay but a little formal and older world

You could say "So how's school going now" "It's okay, but I'm having my mid-term soon, wish me luck."

I wouldn't worry about it so much, you just need to find your own way of speaking that feels comfortable to you.

I'm not trying to call you old, but nowadays sounds like you are really old and you are talking about life when you were a kid - back in the day.  You could say, "How is school this year?"  Or, "How is school lately?"

u can use "......these days" instead of  ".........nowadays"

"I'll be having my mid-term exams soon"
