Question:

Does the gauge of wire affect the speaker?

I hooked up a new siren to my truck. The directions said to use 18 guage wire from the siren to the speaker, I had 14 guage wire already run from an old siren. After I hooked everything up using the old wire I get nothing from the speaker? Do I need to replace the speaker wire or is there another problem?

  1. the gague of the wire should only effect the overall sound quality of the siren not make it stop working.

does the siren have a fuse?

    check your earth and live.

  2. run a new piece from your source to the siren it sounds like the old wire has a nick or something in it which led to it being bad. hop this helps

  3. The gauge has very little effect.  The 14 gauge wire is better than the specified 18.  The lower numbers are simply larger wire.

  4. shouldnt really be a problem. if the speaker wire is old try cutting it and re stripping it to see if it works, if not just use what they reccommend. larger wires draw more power.

  5. this isnt the problem. like the others said, the guage would only affect quality here. u went with a bigger guage so thats all good.
