Does the good side of a decorative fence have to face neighbors?

Chain link fence in place - ours - and good side facing neighbor. We put willow decorative fence on our side of fence that separates yards which adds privacy for both of us. Neighbors had agreed to the fence but don't like it because it looks better on our side. They can easily put the same on their side since it is not expensive but were we wrong to have good side on our side of yard? Thanks.

No, but, it's common courtesy to do so.

i hate to disagree with the first two answers but where i live there is an ordinance on the books that says the finished side must face your neighbors...so i guess it depends where you live...

The neighbor is out of luck. It's your fence. You can do what you want with it. You can even take it down if you want to. No.........it is not common courtesy to do so!!!!!! I put up a fence two years ago. I wanted to look at the finished side. Didn't worry about what any of the neighbors thought....and none of them said anything.
