My father has signed up for Social Security and he and I both got a surprise when an agent told him that because I'm still in school (or, I was, I just graduated two months after he signed up) I get two months worth of benefits...joy! So, anyway, they sent me a letter saying "You will receive $1064 on <date> and <date>"

I was just wondering...will they take taxes out of that $1064? Or will I get at check for that much?

To me it doesn't make much sense to take taxes out of it, plus, they said in the letter that I will be receiving $1064...twice...I get the check soon, but I just wanted to try and make some plans for the money, even though I'm saving most of it.

  1. May be not because if the government take taxes out of it then the government is not governing good. Its for social security so the government need to look after the welfare of the citizens and the nation.

  2. Social Security is taxed.

Its double taxation if you ask me. That money was already taxed.

The one person in congress who has been trying for years to repeal the SS tax is Ron Paul. Write your congressman and ask him/her to sponsor Paul's bill.

  3. Social Security is "income'......If you qualify according to your earnings you will have to pay taxes on earnings just like everyone else...... or if it was paid as part of your fathers earnings he will pay????

Many times the government withholds taxes......but in your case I doubt it......they will probably collect when you or your father files.....talk to an H&R income tax man......
