I think he's like a  government employee for the "powers that be" and is on a fixed salary.  He can not be bribed.  I do know his horse's name---Binky.

The ferryman on the river Stix only takes silver or gold. Not sure if he is really connected with death, he's a private contractor.

The Grim Reaper has an excellent salary and so, wants for nothing of a material nature.  In order to be able to collect everyone, she (a convenient label) has to have some ability to travel through time.  So, she can take as much time off as she wants.  During her down time, she can socialize as much as she wishes with no one being the wiser.

As I said, there have been a few exception.  Most often this is in the form of contests.  If the Grim Reaper looses, the winner is given an extension of life.  However, the amount is up to the discretion of the Grim Reaper.  Poor winners tend to have a smaller extension than good (respectful) winners.  Note, however, since the Grim Reaper gains nothing if she wins, it is rather rare for her to actually submit to a contest.

A final way to win a stay from the Grim Reaper is to be overwhelmingly annoying.  When the Grim Reaper came to take Wacko Warner, he, his brother Yacko, and his sister Dot annoyed the Grim Reaper so much, that he decided not to take them for a very long time (the Grim Reaper was in male form at this time)

Oh by the way, the dude on the river is the ferryman. Some say he is the grim reaper but I'm not sure. You definitely do need to pay him but wait until he gets you to the other side. If you don't pay him, you'll become a ghost instead of resting in peace. I don't know if he takes credit or not, probably not. I doubt he makes change either so bring small bills.
