  1. It depends on the state.  Most students with a diploma with fall into one of two categories-  students who take US History, Biology, Geometry, etc with accommodations.  Their diplomas should look like everyone's else.   Then their are other kids who take classes only for special education students.  Their diplomas may say that their diplomas are awarded by the special education department.

Edit - Not everyone who fulfills their IEP requirements receives an diploma.  Diplomas are awarded by the county on behalf of the state.  Now, in some areas, they could use IEP requirements to fulfills diplomas but under the NCLB regulations, it doesn't work in the interest of the school system.  I've worked in the high schools for almost an decade.  My state has a diploma track for those with an IEP and working way below grade level (mildly mentally retarded is the primary group here).  The kids who can not met the other diploma tracks' requirements receive a Certificate of Attendance - IEP or not!!

  2. An IEP is not a diploma. It is an Individualized Educational Program. It is the program to be followed by the school to ensure that a special needs students gets what he/she needs in order to succeed academically. It states who the student is, the category of qualification, classroom and testing accommodations, and goals with objectives for each area of qualification (usually reading, writing, and/or math).

Diplomas are issued by states. I know that there is only one NC diploma. My guess is that other states only have one as well.

A certificate of attendance is given to students who do not meet the criteria for a diploma. In NC these are given to severe profound students and some moderately intellectually disabled. Occasionally they are given to Occupational Course of Study students who have not yet completed their 360 hours of paid employment, but have completed 28 course credits, 300 hours of school-based work experience, and 240 hours of community-based work experience.

  3. depends on the state-

inmy state everyone gets a standard diploma-whether they graduate based on the reguilar curricullum or based on their IEP requirements

Some states give a modified standard diploma which should still get you into college/employment

some places will only give a Certificate of Completion which isn't worth much

If you have begun High School and there is going to be any changes to your diploma it should specify in your IEP

Some states you need to pass a standardized test to be eligible for a standard diploma in other states you can meet alternative requirements

  4. Every person who completes their IEP obtains a high school diploma.

The IEP is only a guide to illustrate how a public school student with disabilities will have their education specially tailored to meet their needs.

A diploma obtained by a student who had an IEP looks no different. I know this because I obtained my high school diploma with an IEP.

Anybody telling you they are different is lying.
