Does the insurance company send out a list of what prescriptions you filled?

I'm still on my parents insurance for 4 more months until I get my real job (I graduate college in 3 months) and I recently got a prescription filled. I was wondering if they'll get a list of what prescriptions I filled or if they could find out what medication I'm on? I am 21 so I wonder if HIPPA covers my rights.

  1. There isn't a master database of medications, at least not yet.  However, when you sign a medical application you, sort of, "waive" HIPAA for yourself, so it's best to be honest.

The insurance companies do have lists of all claims, but generally, they don't share these lists with each other. If you apply with the same company, they will be able to see your claims.

If you are getting coverage through a group, review the language on pre-existing conditions, and remember that if you go on COBRA for a few months during this time, pre-ex will be waived when you go on the new plan, because of HIPAA.
