Does the iron in the iron sulfide still have the properties of iron?

  1. No, because it is no longer neutral iron. FeS has iron in the +2 state, and ions no longer have the properties of the neutral element.

      Once any 2 elements are joined to form a molecule they loose their original properties and the molecule shows its own properties.  Most widely used example of this is Sodium, a poison that explodes on contact with water, and chlorine, a greenish colored poisonous gas (used in WW1).

    Combined they form sodium chloride, better known as salt.
