Does the keyboard on the HTC PPC6800 phone only light up when its dark???

I purchased a HTC PPC6800 smart phone yesterday, and I noticed today the keyboard would not light up. I called my phone company and they told me to take the phone back and I would get a new one. but last night the light did work, and just now I tryed on a well lighted room and the light stays off, I step in a dark room and the light DOES work(I tryed it several times). but it does not say anything about that on the owners manual. so, do I have a problem or is that how this phones are???? help me

there's a light sensor  on the keyboard basically it turns the light on when its dark if you look on the keyboard it is the grayish circle right above the i.....you can turn off the auto sensor and have the keyboard turn on even when there's ambient light by going to start settings buttons backlight and just uncheck the box
