Question:

Does the lie angle mean that much when selecting a driver for golf?

Up until now I have never given this much thought. I had always thought the length of the club and loft were the biggest factors. How does the lie angle affect a driver??

  1. Well lets put it this way with all the lie angles and face angles that Ping will custom fit you for and does for every set of irons they sell even they dont fit you for lie angle of a driver they only have 1 standard angle for all their drivers.

  2. Think of it this way, if you have to walk with your toes up all the time, it would be kind of difficult!!

If your club have incorrect lie angle for you, you'll need to adjust it all the time when you address the ball, and hitting it. It will effect your swing tremendously. Much more than length and loft of the club.

  3. No, the lie angle is not that important with a driver, especially compared to irons.  The sole of the club does not strike the ground and the face has such little loft, it really doesnt get aimed much left or right when laid upright or flat, like, for example, a 9 iron would.  I've played professionally, I teach, I've played lots of golf with guys who play on tour.  I've never heard any of them talk about lie angle with driver-not once!

  4. Visually, there's a big issue. I simply cannot properly swing a driver with a 57 or 58 degree lie angle. I like more around 60 degrees. I'm sure that I am not the only one who feels this way. It's just the way it LOOKS. Of course, I can't play golf in shorts because my feet look too big! And I live in Georgia. It does get hot. Go figure what makes any serious golfer tick!

  5. The " lie angle" is important with every golf club. You want the sole of the club as parallel to the ground as possible. Your height, arm length, the manner in which one bends at the waist at address all contribute to the appropriate lie angle. You don't want the toe of the club to be off the ground. This  has become a valid reason for club fitting when you purchase a new set of clubs.

  6. GP is right on. Lie angle is only an issue with irons.
