Question:

Does the male King Quail need to be removed when nesting?

I have one male, one female king quail, I know they are thinking of breeding cuz I've seen their mating rituals lately.

Today I found one trampled and pecked egg, the male was walking around backwards with it carrying it in his beak.

I heard somewhere that when they start laying it is best to remove the male for that time, is this true?

  1. It's probably best if you do remove the male. However, if your quail do not get enough calcium (such as oyster shell) then they will eat their eggs to build up calcium. Make sure the have oyster shell or similar at all times.
