  1. When I first moved to Italy there were no "malls" in my city. But I moved there in August and literally 75% of the stores were closed. I thought the city was very peaceful and quiet - until September came around and they all opened back up again. So yes, many stores do close for most of August. As for the malls, since they did not have them when I was there I am not 100% positive, but I am relatively sure they will not close.  I lived in Genova (Genoa) and they now have a large indoor mall. I cannot believe it would close entirely for the month of August - there are too many businesses in there.  Also, near the port in Genoa there were smaller shopping centers that catered to visitors and tourists. Those did not close in August.  The shopping centers near large grocery stores did not close, either, and many of them had clothing stores and catered to the locals.

When I visited some of the larger cities in Italy during August I noticed that there were more stores open than in the smaller towns, but there were still a number of them that were closed for the month. Areas that cater especially to tourists will be open (Venice, for example) as they know that August is vacation time for many travelers and that is a big source of their income.

When you get to Italy and want to find stores that are still open in August, just ask the concierge at your hotel and they should be able to direct you to some areas that are open.

Good luck and enjoy shopping in Italy!

  2. No, the shopping malls and supermarkets do not close during August. Some of the mom and pop shops in cities and smaller municipalities still close but major places remain open. Much has changed in Italy over the years... and some of it for the better.

  3. Mall, superstores are always open, even in smaller towns. Unlike 10-15 years ago, they're now easy to find all around Italy.

Small stores are generally closed everywhere, except in holiday resorts, of course.

  4. A lot of shops and restaurants are closed in August because that's when the Italian vacation period is.

  5. there are no "malls" in Italy like here in the US, if your around tourist areas stores will be open, August is a time to rest and celebrate with Feasts in Italy so if you hit a few smaller towns you will notice things being closed. normal lunch time things are sometimes closed too, but stick to the popular sites and you'll have no issues.

  6. Malls are opened in Italy all year round.  Some of the smaller stores may be closed.  If you are going to visit touristy cities/towns most stores will be open.  The Italians depend on tourists for their income.  I live in Italy and have travelled in the month of August with no problems.  Stores that are closed are things like furniture stores, big factories.  You will never find a lawyer in August!!!!  Enjoy your trip.  Italy is beautiful!!!!

  7. Italy really doesn't have malls they have grocery stores that have a few stores in the same building but they are usually small like you can do it in an hour or two at the very most. The market are usually open and some stores are open. Stores in the touristy areas that you will most likely be in will be open they never close but if you go someplace that does not have a lot of tourism and/or are mom and pop stores they usually close.
