oxidation (loss of electrons) happens at the anode, but does this cause a decrease in the mass of the electrode??

  1. Lets analyze the typical Zn/Cu voltaic cell.

Cu2+ + 2e- --> Cu (reduction - occurs at the cathode - copper is plated out on the copper electrode - the mass of the electrode increases)

Zn --> Zn2+ + 2e-  (oxidation - occurs at the anode - zinc metal dissolves - the mass of the electrode decreases)
