Does the medical field use APA or MLA format?

It really depends on the journal.  Each one has it's own preferences on style guidelines that don't necessary quite match APA or MLA.  For example you can see the preferred styles listed in the two links below for JAMA and NEJM.

I'm not sure about medical, but when I was in nursing school, it was strictly APA.

When writing a paper I use MLA.

When charting it just depends on the day. Sometimes narrative sometime soapies etc
