The NBA has players with the athleticism to be great defenders but they don't dedicate themselves to defense.  Teams and coaches don't focus on defense, either, except those that actually want to win championships (not just the ones that claim they want to win).  Lack of fundamentals, and league rules to some extent, has a lot to do with it as well.  Yes, it would be nice to see some tougher D in the NBA.

There are plenty of good defenders, its just that the rules are different today. The rules are catered toward more scoring. Back in the day u could hand check more. Nowadays u cant even touch the offensive player. What the league needs is better shooters. There are players out there that cant make 15 foot jumpers consistently who are multi millionaires

Better defenders would be nice but the rules really should adjust to a bit more physical play

they need to change the rules and let the defenders actually defend people. theyll never do that, since it probably will decrease the number of viewers and popularity.  offense is more exciting to watch than defense, itll attract more viewers.
