I am really interested in getting a PS3, because there are some great franchises I really like there. But, I need to get a model that supports backwards compatability. Will the new model support that? If not, what model will?

  1. I'm sorry to report that most of the new PS3's no longer have backwards compatibility in order to cut down costs.

You'll need one of the "First Generation" PS3's for that & that's still a questionable deal.

  2. Yes piece of c**p 360 doesn't

  3. No sony has discontinued the backwards compatability feature totally

  4. All ps3 models are backward compatible (psx & ps2).

  5. No.  In fact Sony said at E3 that there are no plans to continue backwards compatibility for PS2 games.  The PS3 (all models) will still play PS1 games, though.  The new line of 80GB systems will no longer play PS2 games, and the 160GB version will not have the feature either.

You might still be able to find one of the old 80GB versions that has PS2 backwards compatibility, but I've heard they're close to selling out, and once they're gone, that's it.  The only other option is to try to find a 20GB, 60GB, or original 80GB on eBay.  Those are the only models that can play PS2 games.

If you're only interested in PS1 compatibility, they all have that.  If you wans PS2, the 60GB can play more PS2 titles than the 80GB or 20GB versions, because it uses hardware emulation instead of software emulation.  The 40GB cannot play PS2 at all.

  6. the 160gb does NOT have backwards compatibility... it is one of the features they had to drop to even think of affording the production, the 80 gig has okay compatibility, and the 40gb has great backwards compatibility but none of them can play all the games
