Nuciferine and nornuciferine ( both are contents of Blue Lotus ) are hypnotic compounds known to relax smooth muscle tissue and to have vasodilating, hypotensive, and anti-arrhythmic properties, similar in action to chlorpromazine.

It has been suggested that it was used by the old Egyptians as a health tonic and as an adjunct to sexual activities
