To an extent, because they are 3ccd cams and offer a fair bit of manual controls, especially the higher-end models. However, I would suggest getting a Canon HV20 if you're looking to make short films/video because it shoots in HD, offers very high picture quality, and also has the option of shooting 24p, for under $500. The next cheapest camera (obviously not counting Canon's other Vixia cameras) that offers quality this good and 24p is the DVX100 and that costs around $3000. Hope this helps!
