  1. Yes, you are supprted at roughly the same financial level of others in the community where you live. It's easy to get an info. packet from them. Just call.

  2. Yes, the PeaceCorps provides a stipend to serving members. HOWEVER, at 17, with no degree, your application to such will not be accepted -- the PeaceCorps needs people with at least Bachelor degrees (they prefer Master's), and a great deal of expertise in a specific area.

The PC program is HIGHLY competitive, and MOST applicants aren't accepted. If you want to be in the PeaceCorps some day, then a degree in something health-related will be highly valued, as will the ability to work in another language (French or Portuguese for Africa), and lots of experience volunteering where you are right now -- for instance, in a program to educate youth about HIV/AIDS prevention.

The following web page gives detailed advice on how to position yourself to some day work for the PeaceCorps (or UN Volunteers or VSO or some other long-term volunteer placement agency), and links to lots of other resources.

It has links to all of the web sites for the aforementioned organizations as well.
