Does the phone's gps work outside the service area?

Question

if i go with my iphone 3g, or with my n95 out in the middle of the pacific, where there isn't even a sign of service coverge, will my gps application work? or does it require signal from the operator?

I believe the application would have to access the Internet. So therefor it would not work.
