I have heard that it does like many blu-ray players but i was thinking if they did this then surely no-one would buy blu-rays? As dvds are much cheaper.

  1. Blu-ray movies are recorded natively at 1080p.

    DVD is only 480p.

While the PS3 can upscale a DVD to 1080p, and this will look better than the same DVD on a normal TV, it still won't be as sharp or detailed a picture as you would get with blu-ray.

  2. It does upscale regular DVD's to 1080p. BUT, that does not mean the quality is as good as a blu ray dvd! Upscaling means the device 'guesses' at the missing information. They do a decent job, but never as good as playing a blu ray DVD. The issue is that the average DVD only has about 480 lines of resolution. So it has to guess at the 'missing' 600 lines. Upscaling really is designed to make regular DVD's not look too bad on an HDTV at 1080p resolution. Blu ray will always be much superior because it's recorded at 1080p, not just being 'upscaled' to 1080p.
