Does the presence of water on earth suggest how the world was many, many years ago?

I already know that they say the earth was once filled with all these certain chemicals and stuff that humans wouldn't be able to survive in, but did the presence of water help them to determine how the world might've been?

Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

I don't think the presence of water is considered suggestive of how the Earth used to be long ago, except that it indicates it *did* have water.  I think most of the evidence for it comes from fossils and geological studies.
