  1. I think that once it is agreed to, we have to abide by the laws even if they are fundamentally changed.

If anyone can actually understand the treaty, that is.

  2. I suspect that in much the same way the States of the United States were once independent the Nations of the EU will become the property of the EU eventually.

  3. As I understand it the Treaty was supposed to be ratified by all EU members before it comes into force.

As Ireland has voted against it therefore cannot truly be seen as a Europe wide Treaty.

This did not stop the 27 heads of government (+ entourages) getting together for a beano on Thursday night to decide not to make a decision until October – another 4 months  - roll on performance related pay for politicians.

They all seem to think that the Treaty is important but are not prepared to do anything about it – a paradox – and a paradox at our expense i.e. the salaries (and Lord let us not forget the expenses!) of all the EU ‘experts’ will still be paid for achieving very little or indeed nothing.

This must mean that there will be a paralysis of government – what is the point of passing national legislation that may be superseded by any future Treaty – particularly when that Treaty is bound to be changed following the Irish result – as far as I’m concerned it’s all weasel words from national and EU governments.

It’s all very well for politicians to have their high horses to climb upon but when their view from that high horse is so totally different to those people on the ground they should modify their approach.

But then can you name a modest member of Government in the EU, UK or USA?

Unfortunately, it’s this stupid intransigence of the so-called senior members (politicians) of the EU that spoils the whole nature of the EU and the original reasons for its formation.

Or perhaps the EU supremos ( or superegos as spell-check more accurately suggested) believe that that the whole thing will drop below the horizon for a little while and we will all have forgotten about it by October.

  4. Does the US constitution allow each state to ratify only the paragraphs they like?

I am afraid supranational law isn´t just that easy.

As the treaty largely defines how the institution would work, anybody wanting amendments on this point (outside the general consensus) should therefore be out of the treaty.

Once a treaty is adopted, modifications would still be possible by the democratically elected parliament
