Sorry if this is an obvious question but i don't know the answer. The question is: in the final of the 4*100 Freestyle which America won, many athletes broke the existing 100m freestyle record in their own leg. Now since it was broken in a different race, will the world record therefore be changed to whatever was set in this one. I think that the last American set 46.06... is that the new WR for 100m freestyle?

  1. no, they have to set the record in the 100 M Freestyle Event, Relay legs dont count. they were talking about it this morning on NBC

  2. Nope, the swimmer must set the record in the individual event in order for it to be an individual world record. Especially in swimming, relay swims tend to be slightly faster because swimmers are allowed to do special step starts that allow them to be propelled off the blocks faster than they would be in a normal race.

  3. The last swimmer will not get credit for the record, however, if the FIRST

person in the relay gets under the WR then it will count, since it is a fair start. The reason the others don't count is because the relay start gives an advantage.

  4. Furry One is correct, Newmie 01 is incorrect.

The first leg can break the record, second, third and fourth cannot set an individual record.
