Does the removal of the adrenal glands lead to death?

My biology textbook says "Both the suprarenal glands are critically vital glands and removal of both results in death".

  1. they provide very useful functions such as secretion of adrenaline and hormones like aldosterone which guides the water and salt absorption. they have very important functions. so when removed they have to be replaced artificially or people die.


  2. Yes. Not only adrenal gland but also any other endocrine gland should not be removed.

    They are also vital organs, like, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, brain, etc.  

  3. Adrenal glands make a lot of different hormones, cortisol, aldosterone being some of the more importaint ones. People who get their adrenals removed need life-long steroid supplementation.

  4. Removal of the adrenal glands in humans causes death through lack of aldosterone, for without aldosterone the body's sodium rapidly disappears via the urine, and sodium is essential for maintaining the volume of circulating blood. Failure of the adrenal glands is called hypoadrenalism or Addison's disease.
