  1. No.  Hardly anyone, and certainly not the schools, pay a differential for the local cost of living any more.  I keep running into people who think they will make more in major cities to compensate them for the higher cost of living, but generally people just have to realize that they will have a lower standard of living there.

  2. I worked in LAUSD for 5 years, made over $70k when i left, lived in a tiny apartment in Glendale. I now work in kern county, ca. making $10k less and can actually afford a home of my own on a half acre of land, (same property in L.A. would be well over $500k). my auto insurance rates went down 30% when I moved out of L.A. county.

  3. No, unless you want to live in a tiny apartment, never having a chance to get a house or townhome. The cost of living in California, esp LA, is considerably higher then in most of the country. That's what is one of the problems now in these communities, all these rich people live there, but they can't get new teachers, or police, or firemen, because they pay them so little and they can't afford to move there.

  4. Absolutely not.  The pay will be higher than most places in the country but it will not offset the cost of living.  I left for a more rural part of LA county, took a $15,000 pay cut and was able to buy a house instead of renting a shack which I shared with two other guys (both teachers too).
