Does the same goose always lead when geese are in flight? Do they trade off being lead goose?

When the lead goose changes with another goose, how often do they do this and what is the percent of greater speed when this is done? How far can one goose lead before wearing down. (miles flown)

  2. I can't tell  you how far they can lead. I have watched them and they are constantly changing. I have seen them changing constantly and other times they stay in formation.  The V formation isn't for speed. It is a way to draft off of the bird in front of the other. They don't have to fight the air when they are aligned up  and flying so they get to conserve energy. That is why they change so they

    can stay fresh enough to fly for 24-36 hours.
