  6. here is a test they did;

Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away — you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't heard that saying before. But is there any truth to it?

More than a thousand years ago, the ancient Britons were already talking up the apple's medicinal qualities. This proverb from that era, translates as "eat an apple before going to bed, make the doctor beg his bread."

Brisbane dietitian Kate Di Prima thinks apples are the perfect nutritional package.

She says that apples are full of fibre, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals and anti-oxidants, all packaged into one handy small item. All that goodness wrapped up in the ultimate fast food. But will eating them really keep the doctor away?

Our reporter Dr Andrew Rochford has volunteered to put his body under the microscope in order to test this theory.

    He's going to record his:

    Blood pressure

    Cholesterol

    Blood sugars

    Weight

This will be his baseline because the good doctor is prescribing himself not one, but two apples a day for the next four weeks. Then we'll be able to see if Andrew's test readings have improved since he's been on his apple diet.

    How did Andrew go?

"It was good, I enjoyed the apples and didn't find it hard to eat a couple extra a day," he says.

Kate says a lot of people are worried that by putting an extra two apples in their day their weight is going to start skyrocketing.

However, Andrew found that his weight stayed stable — didn't go up or down.

So no weight gain. In fact, there was no change in any of Andrew's test results.

There is a reason for Andrew's results.

According to Kate, "If he was an unhealthy specimen to begin with, we'd probably see an improvement in the sugars, especially the fasting sugar, and we'd definitely see an improvement in the cholesterol, the LDL — the nasty one — but [Andrew's] just continuing on so I think that by eating those extra couple of apples it'll pay off in a couple of years time."

So it's a lifetime thing and there's a whole raft of research to support the notion that an apple does indeed keep the doctor away. The humble apple has large quantities of flavonoids, which help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Apples have also been shown to lower the risk of cancers — especially those of the prostate, lung and colon. Eating just two a week can even cut your chances of getting asthma by as much as 32 percent.

Apart from the core, you really should eat the whole apple because two-thirds of the good stuff is in the peel.

Did you know that apples are great at satisfying our need for mid afternoon munchies? Apples have lots of fibre, and fibre hits the fullness switch, which means your stomach won't start rumbling again until dinner.

  7. an apple a day keeps the doctor away but if the doctors cute then s***w the fruit

  9. Hundreds of scientific studies have shown that people who eat 5 or more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day have a significantly reduced risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and many other chronic degenerative diseases.  Since these chronic degenerative diseases kill about 70% of all Americans, "an apple a day" plus 4 more fruits and vegetables not only keeps the doctor away ... it keeps the mortician waiting!

  10. not if you've contracted avian flu

  11. My grandfather is 83, he is healthier than my father! He has been eating healthy food all his life. Including apple a day. Even though he lost his son and did a lot of phisical work, he is still in a perfect shape.

But that doesn't mean apple a day, and then go to McDonalds and after in PIza Hut, it means: healthy food, exersise, and having a spiritual life (belive in God).

I eat apple first thing in the morning, it helps me digest better, and I run to the bathroom at the last bite. If I donn't have an apple, than I am not ablle to go :(

    I hope this heps...

  12. really an apple doesnt maintain all the nutrients for good health in general. also the apple doesnt stop the pain of falling out of the tree to get it.
