I am in the state of Georgia and I am homeschooling my son and daughter; they are 6 and 10. I started homeschooling over the summer; do I need to still notify the board since they did not enroll for the year?

  1. I don't know the exact answer to your question, but as a home school graduate myself I can tell you the most important part of home schooling is knowing the laws in your state before you get started. Home schooling was (and still is) the best thing that ever happened to me and my siblings, just make sure you know *exactly* what you're doing legally before you get started. Laws being what they are, getting yourself untangled once you've missed a step in the process can be messy.

I would suggest starting with a local or state home school group or find an experienced home school family that can help you out with questions, and go from there. Check out Home School Legal Defense Association, http://www.hslda.org , for a break down of laws by state and county, and listings of local, state and national home school groups encompassing all philosophical and religious views. (Consider joining HSLDA, as they do keep extremely up-to-date and release constant updates on changing laws and situations nationally and by state. They also provide legal counsel free of charge beyond your membership dues.) You can also find a layout of GA's state home school law at http://www.ghea.org/pages/resources/stat... , the Georgia Home Education Association website.

Best of luck to you and your kids!
