I was thinking about putting my drumset out in the garage. I just wanted to know if the temperature could affect the tune of the toms or the bass. If it does affect it, could someone please tell me how it affects it.

  1. Absolutely it does.

Colder air will cause the shells to contract and the heads to lose taughtness.  Humidity will also affect this.  It may also cause warping of any wood surfaces, cracking, etc.

When I was a percussionist, we always had to carry a cigarette lighter to use to tighten up traps like tambourines that had been exposed to cold weather or humidity.

  2. Yes it does.. Cold contracts and heat expands. Drum heads and pliable.. I know from storing my drums in different climates i would always have to retune them.
