Hormonal birth control does a couple things.

First, it tries to prevent ovulation.

As a back up, though, it thickens the cervical mucous and thins the endometrial wall.  It does this so that incase you do ovulate and an egg gets fertalized, it will be very difficult for the egg to implant.
