Does the train ticket machines accept one dollar coins??

Unfortunately I can't speak for MetroNorth, but many other commuter and light rail systems in the US both accept and dispense dollar coins.  (Transit and gambling casinos are about the only places those dollar coins are used.  The candy/soft drink vending machine folks should take notice.)

Well, I know the machines for CALTRAIN do... they dispense the pesky things as change, and thankfully eat them as payment.

I'd need to know the RAIL System you're riding to answer correctly, but I would GUESS that in the USA there is a relatively standard machine manufacturer.
