  1. London is a municipality-- a city run by both Mayor and council. We have several municipalities in the US as well.  There is also the area of Greater London, which surrounds London City.  This is similar in form to places like the Dallas/Ft Worth metro area.  There is the city proper, and, essentially, suburban neighborhoods surrounding London.  Additionally, there are councils and boroughs, and in N. Ireland, counties.

I recommend that you quickly read Wikipedia's description of United Kingdom Politics and Government to get the full picture.

I hope this helps.  It is the long answer for "no states".  But definately other, mid-sized givermental organizations.

  2. The UK is made up of 4 countries- England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

London is the capital of England.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland.

Cardiff is the capital of Wales.

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland.

The government of the United Kingdom is based in London, but each country (apart from England) has its own government that decides on local decisions.

We don't have states. Each county (the four listed above) have different laws, like states, but they are individual countries. Within each country you have counties, such as the county of Greater London.

  3. No. The UK is divided up into 4 countries, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each country is then divided into counties. London is just the capital city :)

  4. No.
