Question:

Does the use of marijuana by males effect fertility in the long term?

My now husband used marijuana regularly in his late teens, which was 10 years ago, and says that he had unprotected s*x with his girlfriend at the time and she never got pregnant. Because of this he thinks that he is infertile. I tell him that she may have been infertile, not him. Can his use of marijuana back then affect our chances of having children? We are not trying at the moment but would like children in 3-5 years time. Any advice?

  1. Um I heard that it makes the sperm more slow and they dont tend to live as long

  2. I dont know the details; but it can definately lower his sperm count.

I would get everything checked out! :)

  3. No, marijuana cannot make you permanently infertile. His sperm count has most likely jumped up to a normal level since then. The only way to know for sure is to visit a fertility doctor.

  4. jimmy is right. If he was still smoking it on a regular basis then yes it would lower his sperm count, but 10 years later than no. His sperm count has built back up and he probably can contribute just fine. :)

But if he is worried then he should go see a doctor and they can find out his sperm count.

  5. Well I can say that I know from experience that marijuana can decrease the sperm count while it is being used but I am not sure if it is long lasting for ten years though.  I don't think so though.  My ex was using it and I know I am very fertile cause I have fallen pregnant the first time before so it wasn't me and it took me 8 months to fall pregnant with my daughter.  As long as he is not using it now and hasn't for along time then it should be ok.  Another way to increase your chances of falling pregnant when you choose to is your husband wearing boxers instead of briefs and you need to find out when you ovulate and ONLY have intercourse during your fertile time.  Also certain foods can also reduce a man's sperm count but I am not sure which ones they are.  Ask him to avoid masturbating up to one week before your ovulation time so as to concentrate the sperm so to speak.  You should have no trouble.  By the way your ovulation day should be 12-14 days after the first day of your period.  Hope this helps.
