  1. I dont think so it says to cover your chest and lengthen your garments. It also says to draw a veil when leaving the house so that the women are seen as chaste (or something like that) and wont be looked upon (in lust or something) or raped. You can relax your dress code with your family and a few other people named in particular.

    Forgive me if this is wrong I'm taking it from memory.

    People wear the hijab for modesty most people wont mess with a hijabie where I'm from so it's perfect.

The qur'an used the word khimar, which most interpret to mean "headcovering" rather than just "covering," because that is what most women wore during the Prophet's pbuh time, cept they didn't cover their chests, hence the line, "and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs)." I did a lot of research on this to prove to my dad that khimar means covering the head, which he did not believe, so he was hesitant in supporting me when I wear hijab.

    And say to the faithful women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it, and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs), and not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments.     1) Lower the gaze (24:31)

    2) Guard the private parts (24:31)

    3) Not display their beauty except their faces and hands (24:31)

    4) Extend the khimar to cover the bosom (24:31)

    5) Not display their beauty beyond the face and hands except to the people listed in 24:31

    6) Not stamp their feet so as to reveal hidden beauty (24:31)

    7) Draw the jilbab close around them when abroad (33:59)

    Now, it is very clear. If a woman must conceal all of her beauty except her face and hands, she must necessarily be concealing her hair. Even if "not to display their beauty except what is apparent" were the only text in the verse, yet as the Prophet (sAas) has explained the meaning of the Quran, a woman would still have to cover everything but her face and hands.

    We can also look at the meaning of the word "khimar". The word "khimar" comes from the root KHAMARA meaning "to cover". However, the particular form "khimar" may have a more specific meaning. Let's look at what it is:

    1) In the Arabic of the Prophet (sAas), the word "khimar" referred to a HEADCOVERING. This can be seen in the hadiths in which the Prophet (sAas) wiped his wet hands over his khimar and his socks, from which the scholars have derived that it is halal to wipe wet hands over the HEADCOVERING and the socks.

    2) The authorities on classical Arabic have defined the word "khimar" as a HEADCOVERING. For instance the dictionary Aqrab al-Mawarid defines the word "khimar" as, "All such pieces of cloth which are used to cover the head. It is a piece of cloth which is used by a woman to cover her head". The great scholar Imam Abu'l-Fida ibn Kathir defines the word "khimar" in the following words, "Khumur is the plural of khimar which means something that covers, and is what is used to cover the head. This is what is known among the people as a khimar". A modern scholar, Shaykh Muhammad al-Munajjid says, "Khimar comes from the word khamr, the root meaning of which is to cover. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'Khammiru aaniyatakum (cover your vessels).' Everything that covers something else is called its khimar. But in common usage khimar has come to be used as a name for the garment with which a woman covers her head; in some cases this does not go against the linguistic meaning of khimar. Some of the fuqaha have defined it as that which covers the head, the temples and the neck. The difference between the hijab and the khimar is that the hijab is something which covers all of a woman’s body, whilst the khimar in general is something with which a woman covers her head".

    3) Imam Abu Abdullah Qurtubi describes the historical circumstances relating to the wearing of the khimar in pre-Islamic Arabia as follows, "Women in those days used to cover their heads with the khimar, throwing its ends upon their backs. This left the neck and the upper part of the chest bare, along with the ears, in the manner of the Christians. Then Allah commanded them to cover those parts with the khimar". Similarly, Imam Abu'l-Fida ibn Kathir reports, "'Draw their khumur to cover their bosoms' means that they should wear the khimar in such a way that they cover their chests so that they will be different from the women of the jahiliyyah who did not do that but would pass in front of men with their chests uncovered and with their necks, forelocks, hair and earrings uncovered". Both of these descriptions provide clear, explicit, specific explanations of what "extend their khimars to cover their bosoms" means.

    4) The scholars have agreed unanimously that the khimar is a HEADCOVERING.


  5. Dear Raw, I had the same issue as yours and searched a lot for the subject. Now, even if we neglect the Ahadith just for one second and focus on the Qur'an we can see that the issue of covering the body modestly is a 100% definite issue and covering the hair is 99.99% definite.

    First, women are commanded in the following verse to dress modestly and to cover their bosoms with their Khimar. The word Khimar is interesting as they say that it was used to mean "head-covering" or "head-scarf" and that's why the Qur'an states it.

    024.031 وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُنَّ أَوِ التَّابِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُولِي الإرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا عَلَى عَوْرَاتِ النِّسَاءِ وَلا يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِينَ مِنْ زِينَتِهِنَّ وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

    024.031 And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of s*x; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.

    Now, I must admit, that I just frown upon those who put their own words into the translations and thus imply something that wasn't necessarily implied in the verse itself. Some people, when reaching the expression "that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof", they put in two parentheses (palms of hands, one eye or two eyes for seeing the road!!!). From where did they get that?! It is NOT in the verse.

    However, the Arabic word is "Khumurihinna" which is the plural of "Khimar" and means a head-cover so the meaning of the verse appears to be "and that they should draw their head-scarves over to their bosoms" and thus implying the head and as well the chest.

    Another verse tells women to wear something that would hide the figure of the body when they go out in order to be protected from molestation:

    033.059 يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لأزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلابِيبِهِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ فَلا يُؤْذَيْنَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا

    033.059 O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known  (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

  7. I don't think so. The Qur'an states that a woman must cover up "that which is apparent". Though this quote is interpreted by different people in different ways hence why some Muslim women cover up everything and others just dress modestly.

    The word "Hijab" appeared in the Quran 7 times, five of them as "Hijab" and two times as "Hijaban," these are 7:46, 33:53, 38:32, 41:5, 42:51, 17:45 & 19:17.

    None of these "Hijab" words are used in the Quran in reference to what the traditional Muslims call today (Hijab) as a dress code for the Muslim woman.

    "Khimar" is an Arabic word that can be found in the Quran in 24:31  While the first basic rule of Dress Code for the Muslim Women can be found in 7:26, the second rule of the DRESS CODE FOR WOMEN can be found in 24:31. Some Muslims quote verse 31 of sura 24 as containing the Hijab, or head cover, by pointing to the word, khomoorehenna, (from Khimar), forgetting that God already used the word Hijab, several times in the Quran. Those blessed by God can see that the use of the word "Khimar" in this verse is not for "Hijab" or for head cover. Those who quote this verse usually add (Head cover) (veil) after the word Khomoorehenna, and usually between brackets ( ), because it is their addition to the verse not God's.

    if a female wants to cover her head thats fine, but if people say it is ordered by Allah Allmighty then its wrong,we CAN NOT innovate (delete/add) any thing in Glorious Quran.we have to adjust ourselves to Glorious Quran we have to correct our practices according to Glorious Quran,and not the other way round.our practices could be wrong and full of error BUT Glorious Quran is 6:114,6:38.

    Allah Allmighty wouldnt punish you for covering your head.Hijab is A COMPULSION,but understand first what HIJAB means ? we have associated head cover with  hijab,which is not true just covering head is not Hijab ,,the meaning of Hijab is totaly different from just head cover...

    The Arabic word for CHEST, GAYB is in the verse (24:31), but the Arabic words for HEAD, (RAAS) or HAIR, (SHAAR) are NOT in the verse. The commandment in the verse is clear - COVER YOUR CHEST OR BOSOMS, but also the fabrication of the scholars and most of the translators is clear by claiming- cover your head or hair.

    "Khimar" is an Arabic word that means, cover, any cover, a curtain is a Khimar, a dress is a Khimar, a table cloth that covers the top of a table is a Khimar, a blanket can be used as a Khimar..etc. The word KHAMRA used for intoxicant in Arabic has the same root with Khimar, because both covers, the Khimar covers (a window, a body, a table . . . etc.) while KHAMRA covers the state of mind. Most of the translators, obviously influenced by Hadith (fabrications) translate the word as VEIL and thus mislead most people to believe that this verse is advocating the covering of the head.

    In 24:31 God is asking the women to use their cover (khimar) being a dress, a coat, a shawl,any thing which, covers their bosoms, not their heads or their hairs. If God so willed to order the women to cover their heads or their hair, nothing would have prevented Him from doing so. GOD does not run out of words. GOD does not forget. God did not order the women to cover their heads or their hair.
