  1. Yes. If you need to use the optical cable for your surround sound system (if you have one that doesn't support HDMI audio), or are hooking up to a DVI monitor and need an external analog audio output, you'll need some sort of external audio adapter.

You'll need to either get the official Microsoft HDMI adapter (comes with HDMI cable and dongle with analog and optical audio outs that plugs into the standard AV port),  disassemble your current cable with this: http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50 Or if you don't want to disassemble your cable, I found the $20 universal Psyclone component cable (available at Wal-Mart) worked for getting external audio with an HDMI cable, but it's a bit of a tight fit so the thinner the casing around your HDMI connector, the better. The HDMI cable I have from Monoprice fit, I believe.

Of course, if you don't need external audio, then disregard what I just said, lol.

  2. yup, hdmi cable will replace both audio and video source and it provide better quality as well. inspiretech sell a decent one for 5 buck

  3. Yes the HDMI cable will allow you to play games in hi-def. You might have to change the display settings before it will work. But after you do that all you should have is the power supply and the HDMI cable left.

  4. yes, when you run HDMI, all that will run between your xbox and your tv is the HDMI cable.  it takes care of all audio and video signals.

  5. You don't need to use BOTH at the same time obviously, so just connect up the HDMI and you'll get the best signal....
