This is a 1983 xl 600r with 18000 miles. It used to run but now wont fire up when i try to kickstart it. I changed the spark plug and the head of the spark plug went black after a couple of kicks on the bike. I cleaned the carburetors so i doubt that its a problem with them. Also, when it used to work, it would have a very horrible idle, and when running at slows speeds it feels like it cuts off, but at higher speeds it works well. Can anyone diagnose possible problems with this bike from the information given, or does anyone know if this is due to the stator and the bike needs a new stator?

  1. Low compression from either worn piston rings or worn valves, You need a compression test and leakdown test to get a better idea of the problem. When was the last time the valves were adjusted? could be part of the problem also.
