Apart from the bit of our economy where banks went into the sub prime market which they do not understand and got their fingers burnt one other thing stands out.

If people do not spend money - the economy suffers !

Profits from Supermarkets mainly go abroad and are not spent in this country. Money spent on drink in supermarkets therefor go out of the economy.

People cannot sit in pubs in comfort and have a pint and smoke so therefor are staying at home. Lots of pubs are pretty much individually run so their money goes into our economy which mean other people make money and are employed.

About 27 pubs a week are closing according to a report in the Daily Telegraph today so things can only get worse.

Am I wrong in thinking that the catalyst of the problem is the smoking ban which is also killing a communal way of life and has this not also been shown in other countries with a similar ban, apart from maybe France who takes no notice of much except the last German occupation !

  1. I think the sub prime market is more than a 'bit of our economy'.

I am not sure about profits from supermarkets going abroad. In any case, the supermarkets employ lots of people here, pay taxes here, pay for distribution here, so a lot of the money must stay in the country.

  2. The smoking ban was the straw that broke the camels back regarding pub closures.

They were already suffering with supermarkets selling cheap booze and increased taxes

  3. No, i don't think the smoking ban could have contributed to this all by itself.

  4. You are not going to like this

BUT blaming the smoking ban for a pubs closing is a bit pointless.

    Smoking kills.

It causes cancer amongst other nasty illnesses, the debt on society hardly makes up for the taxes they raise.

    I don't smoke so why would I want to go to a pub for a quiet orange-juice ( I'm teetotal, too ) & breathe second-hand smoke?

    Cough cough.

Pubs, Inns & the entertainment business will have to make money some other way, won't it?

They've had the Get-Rich years, with the binge-drinking, happy-hours & half-price promotions, all things come to an end eventually when deemed bad for your health.

Responsible alcohol consumption needs to return to the UK, banning smoking was the best thing ever.

All we need to do is ban it from outside pubs, shops etc etc.

It's made a walk up any high street, into a sad pitiful experience dodging the smokers & cigarette butts littering the pavements.

    EDIT.

I stick by my comment, the taxes raised DO NOT cover the cost of smoking & all the related diseases treated by the NHS.

9 billion sounds a lot but It's not just the Smoker who's treated but the non-smokers around them.

& STILL goes back to the same thing..........

a pub that allows smoking is condoning death.

No-one in their right mind is going to do that are they?

Not if they use their common sense.
