  1. Regardless of what people say, many sites simply copy off Wikipedia word-for-word. Cross-referencing won't do much. Wikipedia usually has very good sources (as is their standard). If no sources or questionable sources are given, there is a warning put up. If you feel you don't trust Wikipedia enough, go right to the sources at the bottom of the page and look at the information, yourself.

  2. The Wikipedia world population count comes from the United Nations' statistics.   It is in line with other population projections I have seen.  Yes, I would say it is as accurate as an estimate can be.

  3. My Opinion

I would think the population statistics are probably accurate.  Most of the sites are estimates which we know are not accurate but at least the stats. came from United Nations'.

Wikipedia is not the best site to use for research. Some Universities will not accept wiki as a resource and tell their students not to bother handing in papers when their source is wiki.  Basically anyone can be a member, log in and edit if they have more up to date information. Anyone can write articles for wiki and those articles will be edited prior to posting. One can't be really sure that the material on wiki is 100% accurate. There are other sources out there (university, government) that would have more of a chance of being accurate.

Here is a page that tells you about Wiki and how it works.
