Why are people still surprised by England's lack of International success? The furthest they've ever got in the European Championship is the Quarter finals (same as Wales), and only twice have they progressed beyond the Quarters in the World Cup (one more than Wales and both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland!).

Also, the foriegn footballers playing in England has nothing to do with England's lack of International success. When English clubs - particularly Liverpool - ruled Europe in the 70's & 80's with home grown talent, England still did not qualify for 2 World cups in 1974 & '78 (whereas Scotland did) nor the European champiuonship in '76. Check out Enland's record since 1950 when they bit the bullet and decided to join the International community and partake in the World Cup (the USA knocked them out that year!) Their record over 60 years is nowhere near say Germany, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, France, Holland or even Uruguay! They are perennial underachievers due to the technically inferior way that English and British clubs play. It's different at Club level where other factors have a bearing. Also, more recently the English clubs are even stronger due to they're massive buying power. As Bobby Robson once said, England are at best merely a top 8 side internationally.

  1. Your question was"why are people still surprised by Englands lack of international success"? I don't know of anyone who is or has ever said they are.

You have to be a member of the England supporters club to apply for tickets for England games (costs £80) to be a member.Apparently there has been a 20% drop in applications so I think people have had enough of the glitz and hype (there are only so many times you can hype up dross)

England fans want to see England win ,BUT we know the nat team is woeful. We all saw the Euros last June, and anyone who has any interest in football from these shores could see that the fooball;; being played by the likes of Holland,Russia and Spain was miles ahead of anything England could produce

What I would like to see is Cappello put a young squad together and allow it to grow and become experienced even at the expense of games but there is no chance of that. The media would slaughter him when the first defeat/draw happened .So we just have to plow on with the best left back in the world (Ashley Cole) the best midfielders in the world (Gerrard and Lampard) and best all round player (Rooney) LOL .

I have to laugh when they say that or I'd cry

  2. the liverpool team that was so successful in the 80s was built with a spine of scots, hansen, souness, dalglish also they won once with a team that contained no englishmen(unheard of those days)..with other scots, welsh, northern irishman so why no success for them then?..at best always an outside chance but a chance all the same..

  3. great thinking  Taff man.

  4. England beat Russia in the 3rd/4th place play off to finish third in the 1968 European Championship after losing in the semi final..

  5. damned rite, heard enough bout '66 even when there not there,we run bets in the pub to see how long it takes the commontiters to mention it or who plays for an eng team, remember' wembley 67!!!!!!!!!!
