Does this concern anyone?

Does it concern anyone the amount of inexperienced people who are attempting to break horses by themselves?

Then they come on yahoo and ask for advice, surely if you have to ask for advice on how to break a horse on the net then you shouldn't be doing it in the first place, training is somethig you have to see in order to learn.

Thoughts?

  1. I totally agree... I mean there was a girl on here a couple of weeks ago saying she had no problem walking on a horse but had never trotted and she needed help training in her own horse.... I mean its people like that are the ones who are ignorant... and don't consider how the horse will turn out. The is enough horses that have been ruined due to people who think they will start it and don't finish it...

  2. It does concern me the fact that young unexperienced people are trying to break young horses or problem horses.  I give them credit for asking for help but you are right they need to have someone there to help control the situation!  Just because you can get a horse for free or really cheap does not mean you will get a horse you can enjoy or save money since it will still cost you to train them and sometimes the money you will spend on a trainer you could have had a great broke hose you could safely ride right away.

I do train horses and have asked questions about behavior that had stumped me with a horse and received great advice.  But I have common sense to ask before doing something that may hurt myself or someone else as well as the experience to work through an issue.

Green riders and Green horse equal fustrated and hurt horses and riders!

  3. yes i agree with you they should take classes or something with a person that they know knows how to break a horse etc...not get the info on the internet

  4. When it concerns me most is if the person asking the question appears to have no help coming from anyone outside of Y/A.  It is possible to learn a great deal by watching trainers work, even if they are working with other people's horses and not hired by you personally.  So, I would say it is also possible to learn by watching training videos.

But every horse is different, and when you go to try something you have observed, there should be a knowledgeable and experienced horse handler somewhere in the vicinity in case all goes wrong. I also wonder, when it is a young person posting a question, why the parents would buy a green horse for an inexperienced child.  I assume it is out of a lack of knowledge on their part as well, which means nobody has the knowledge needed to handle the horse.

So the situation that is most dangerous is when a kid owns a green horse kept on a private property with parents who are inexperienced and appear to have no access to a trainer.  And it stands to reason that more questions would be asked here by someone in that situation.

  5. Yes it does concern me. Nut you don't know the situation. What if they are very experienced and are trying something new. In order to e got to learn you have got to ask questions.

Good Luck to anyone out there trying to train a hors

  6. Yes another person on here with a brain! I have been riding for 17 years and have broken a few babies. Never tried doing that though without the knowledge of my trainer for the first one that is. I don't understand why people are coming on here asking for advice on breaking, training, so on and so fourth. I am a member of the Chronicle of the horse board... i swear if half of the dumb questions were asked on there, people would be laughing all the way to the barn that night! I feel the same way about the people who think they are solving problems using a stronger bit not trying to actually work through the problem the hard way!

  7. Even the most experienced trainer was once inexperienced.  You have to start somewhere.

AND for those who think training a horse is so difficult that the average person cannot do it, well, you're ignorant!  Now, I realize it depends on the horse and that there are plenty of dangerous horses out there, but if one has a horse who has been handled, takes the time to do some reading, asks some experienced horse people for some guidance/advice/tips and take the time and patience to do it right, it isn't THAT difficult.

Case in point, my husband's friend has ridden our horses but has never trained a horse himself.  He found a horse who's owners couldn't care for him any more and needed someone to take him.  The horse is 4 years old and has been  handled, but not ridden.  My husband's friend brought him to our place and has been training the horse himself, with some guidance from us, since we have trained many horses.  Now, we aren't riding the horse for him, we are simply offering some tips and advice.  The horse has been ridden 3 times since he arrived on Thursday.  Everything is going very well...the horse has not been mistreated and my husband's friend is taking it slow and easy.

SO, for those of you who are so RUDE and NEGATIVE towards people who are new to training and have some questions....stop making yourself look ignorant and self-righteous and HELP out!  Remember, you too, were once inexperienced when it came to horses.

Like A  Fox:  I read back through my answer and cannot find where I called YOU ignorant.  However, you do make a lot of assumptions as you have to on here since so many people don't give enough detail in their questions.  Has it ever occurred to you that the people who are asking questions about training have some experience, but may have found a horse that isn't responding in the desired way to what they already know?  Have you ever thought that MANY sellers are not forthcoming about the horse they are selling and even go to the extent of DRUGGING the horse to make him seem calm and easy to handle.  I know one horse dealer that has drugged horses because the horses were not able to be ridden otherwise.  I witnessed it myself.  I also know of several dealers who know the horses bad habits and problems, but they do not pass this info. on to potential buyers.  SO, not everyone on here who asks questions about training a horse is totally clueless....some, yes, but you assume by the question asked  and how it is asked that these people shouldn't be attempting to train a horse on their own.  How about simply answering the question if you know so much about training horses...or how about asking for additional information?  I see many people adding comments and info to their questions because readers have asked.

Like A Fox:  By your own admission you're ignorant because what I said was " AND for those who think training a horse is so difficult that the average person cannot do it, well, you're ignorant! "  I didn't identify YOU as being one of those people.  Read the answer next time and be more specific in with your question.  Some people DO need professional help when it comes to traiing a hrose and obviously, YOU are no professional or you could help them.

I read what you said, but you obviously didn't read what I said and I am so tired of talking to someone who is at such an intellectual disadvantage.  Sorry for picking on you, dear.

  8. Yes, its very abusive to attempt to work with animals without the proper training.  Even those who are trained can have problems, but inexperienced people can harm the animal forever.

  9. Yes thats a pet peeve of mine! I totally agree and think some people just get horses to "pet them" and have them for a pet when they really are friends not pets and ya. Just because there rich doesnt mean they can get a horse!

There is a lot more than petting them :)

  10. i think that you certainly need to have a certain amount of experience of how to handle young horses and the right way/routine to do it - not rush or overload the horse etc

i have done my BHS stage 2 and although i have been breaking in horses since i was 14 years old (13 yrs ago) - theres only so much that I would do on a horse before its out of my league - i dont know too much about properly schooling to a high standard and after recently recovering from a fractured pelvis that i did jumping my arab, have decided that I'm not getting any younger and that I will now send my youngsters away to be professionally broken etc so that it is done properly for the best start in life

  11. Agreed. However, at least they did ask for help prior to attempting it... not that it makes it ok..

  12. It definitely concerns me.  They always throw out the argument that "if I get a young one, we can learn and grow together" or "then I will have it for a LONG time."  Anyone who has been around horses for more than half a second knows how ridiculous both those arguments are.  Oh and of course there is the classic "you have to start somewhere" argument, as mentioned above.  Yeah, when I didn't know how to drive, the first thing I did was get in a race car and drive it 100mph because, well, you have to start somewhere.  Again, another ridiculous argument.

I always say what Debi said: it's not like getting a puppy.  Horse psychology is much different than dog psychology.  And anyway most people's dogs are horrendously behaved anyway.  If we had 1000+ pound horses as poorly behaved and poorly trained as the general dog population, horses would probably be considered too dangerous to own as pets!

I rode and had formal training for 15 years before I ever decided to take a stab at training a horse.  And even then, I just do it for myself, I wouldn't consider training a horse for someone else and/or charging money for it.  My horses are trained well enough for me and my liking and skill level, but I'm still not good enough to do it as a career.  And yet there are teenagers on here claiming that they make a living training horses.

I guess it's good that people are asking for advice but honestly, most of the questions are something that some more formal training would help them with or are so simplistic that they shouldn't be anywhere near a horse under the age of 7.

  13. It used to concern me, but not anymore....there's nothing you can do, since you can't cure stupid.

I have been riding under the instruction of trainers for nearly 15 years...and I STILL wouldn't attempt to break a horse all by myself.

  14. hiya. . . give me a second to answer cause yahoo isnt letting me post for some reason. . .

    ha got it, my answer:

it does, but my eyes glaze over most the questions and the ones i do answer most the time it says:

go get a trainer, you need one.

the part that i does concern me alittle more is the amount of people here who dont want to take their horse's to the vet but ask if they should first. why take the time to ask when you know 90% of the people are going to tell you: call the vet already.

and no, i think you should learn how to work with horses from a REAL LIVE PERSON INFORNT OF YOU.... not infront of your computer screen.

    1. the person in real life can see the whole picture, not the parts you choose to tell on the puter screen

    2. if you get hurt, the person in real life can call for help and help you, the people online will just go about their bizz answering other questions till you come back and say: i got hurt, why did my horse do that?

3.it takes years of work to even start thinking about breaking horses, and even then it isnt a walk in the park, why i think people should find real life in person trainers to help them learn this proccess.

edit: to pony who called everyone ignorant. . . you do know that you just proved everyone's point while insulting them?

YOU were the horse people there in real life for your husband's friend.  YOU were the teachers who helped him in real life, not on a computer screen.  just wanted to say thanks for proving my point.

  15. Yes, they seem to think that it is like training a dog ( and most people seem unable to do a passable job at that too) Personally I have helped in and watched the training of several young horses but it is not something I would attempt to do on my own.

What worries me even more is that some of these people seem to be very young and I'm wondering wtf their parents were thinking when they bought an untrained horse.

Edit> I think it is the latest get-a-cheap-horse fad brought about by the sudden availability at knock down prices of all the byb foals that nobody wants. Poor foals.

  16. You should only break a horse in if your an experinced rider. and this is not a place to get help for a not trained horse. some people can be wrong you should be asking a trainer. but you shouldn't be breaking a horse in anyways if your not experianced that's just dumb

  17. There is an old saying that goes:

"you will ruin 3 before you learn enough to train one right".

    I agree with this.

You can not learn to break and train a horse by information solely obtained from the internet.

The internet has its place, but can not replace hands on experience.

  18. yes because they are not only risking hurting themselves but they also might hurt the horse. if you dont know how then you shouldnt be doing it.

    thats is my opinion

  19. I agree on what you say but some people will want to know instant results which sometimes could work but most of the time doesn't.Also people learn from reading than actually seeing.  Ive asked a question on her that might seem dumb and think i might not know what I'm doing but this is my 10th year of training horses and instructing lessons. But sometimes i need to see it written down to understand and sometimes i need to see it being done in action. But i do agree if they are outrageous like this horse is free should i get it? those type of questions i see if you asking it on here than you shouldn't get a horse.

But if they are here asking how to do one thing like what would be best blanket first or saddle? etc. than i dont think they are incompetent and shouldn't be doing it. Maybe they would like to see how another person has been doing it and improve their way. That's what i used to do where i took info from differnt people and made my own which worked out great. So this question can go differnt ways.

Only thing that gets me annoyed is where people dont ask questions and think its right the way they are doing and s***w the horse up pretty bad. I hate when people do that or use punishment to their furstration then that really concerns me. I mean i like working with horses like than and see when they get worked with right way and go off and be somthing great.

  20. I agree that inexperienced people should not be breaking horses by themselves. The fact is its downright dangerous.

That being said, what is wrong with people getting advice on the internet? I think its OK for people to seek the advice of others that know more about a given topic.

Back to what you said, yes people need to see it in order to learn it, and they need to do horse training under the supervision of an expert if they have never done it before. Horse training can be dangerous even for the experts! I knew a lady that was a master horse trainer, and she broke her arm and a leg on different occasions.

One observation I've had visiting clients is that a lot of people have horses these days and have no idea what they are doing. What happens is people get money, decide they want horses, and then end up with a bunch of problems. Recently I met these people that routinely went on trail rides, but they could not handle their horses at all just leading them to get tacked up! The horses were completely taking advantage of them. And these people are out riding in the mountains? That is nuts if you ask me.

But I am less concerned with the people doing harm to a horse than I am people getting hurt. Horses are big animals and dangerous situations can result, whether you're experienced or not. The problem with inexperience is people can get themselves into more trouble more often and are more likely to get hurt in most circumstances.

  21. There's a lot of retards out there, and Y! answers seems to attract the most cretinous kind...

  22. It doesnt annoy me, it scares me!!!

they will ruin them, then try to sell them and thenblame the buyer!!!

    twits!

they only go out and buy unbroken horses because they know they can afford it, they dont bother going through all the training and learning first! its stupid and they will get themselves or their horses killed before long.

So if anyone who has done this is reading this YOU ARE AN A** H*LE AND STOP SPOILING GOOD HORSES!!!
