A small to medium sized automobile that gets about 25 MPG and the engine is developing approximately 20 BHP wile consuming 2.5 GPH at freeway speed. The amount of thermal energy being used is 2.5 X 2546 BTU/HP = 51,000 BTU wile consuming 2.5 GPH at 120,000 BTU per gallon for a total of 300,000 BTU. Admittedly these are approximations. Some figures are that the Otto cycle efficiency is as high as 38% when operating at max torque. But most agree that 20 to 25% is normal operation.

To restate, 50,000 BTU is being used while 300,000 is being created. The 250,000 BTU of heat energy remaining is mostly being dumped into the environment.

  1. Global warming wouldn't be in existence if the long haired tree huggers would just CUT THEIR HAIR.

Their body temperature would immediately drop 2-3 degrees.

And if they stopped frying their brain, it would drop another 5.

  2. This would effect global warming so much if it existed!

there is record amounts of ice on the polar ice caps

    nothing to worry about=[)

  3. Eh, Luke....... You and every other animal that breaths

    air produces CO2 ......

Ennyways, out of that remaining heat, for the said engine

to operate , a steady temp slightly above 100c's

is necessary or else it won't run...

Why aren't y'all happy with what you have !?

The horse and buggy interest ye Luddites?

Think you'll live long toughing it out on your own?

History.....is packed full of generational h***s on Earth of

disease, social maleficence, war(empire & global),

    archane medical knowledge, etc......

Enjoy this modern-era in witch we live !!!!

I am quite safe to say not too many of y'all would know what to do if all we take for granted today were to end.

h**l, so many of todays' population live in this pseudo-

eco animal-'rights' mentality that they fear crankin' a few

mice in the cupboard....... How  ever are you to live if it ever came to pass that you have to fend for yourself!?!

    No mall - no cloths.....

    No supermarket - no food.....

(An)al Gore is a political hack..... Think for Yourselves!!!

  4. ice age is coming

  5. No the radiator is not perfect. So you're a little off.

  6. "Does this effect global warming, see details?"

    Negligibly, at best.

    Edit:

Waste heat contributes very little to GW. The average global forcing is 15e12/(4*1.3e14) = ~0.029 W/m2 (with  4*1.3e14 m2 being the area of the Earth and 15 being the global energy use in 2005 in TW). Clearly a small amount, but not nothing.

  7. To answer your gusetion YES anything that creates CO2 adds to the problem

  8. The answer is yes, but on a longer time scale than that caused by greenhouse gas emissions.  Humans generate a lot of waste heat, not just through the cars but also through everything else they do.  This heat will eventually build up, warming the planet just as surely as greenhouse gases.  If human population and energy use keep growing, we will have to contend with this sort of global warming in several hundred years.

EDIT: bob326 does an interesting calculation.  The forcing is relatively small today, but the growth rate of 2% gives something like a 35 year doubling time, which would put it at around 1 W per square meter in a couple hundred years.

  9. According to the majorities in this world eight out of ten peoples believe the change of climate is caused by human activities, including transportation and industry. Regardless of how big or how small the thermal energy being used or generated, sooner or later it will be accumulated Co2, SO2, and other impurities of forming the dangerous green house gas effect. For instance, Hong Kong has two coal-fired power generating stations and the burned fossil fuel plus the bunker fuels used by sea going ships, boats and trucks, making 35-40% of dark cloudy sky year round. The Hong Kong magazine, May 16, 2008 published a well wriiten article by John Robertson, named as "Green living dreams. And why they won't come true in Hong Kong", has provided the above-noted report. Hong Kong has a car flow capacity of greater than 400/km, many are still using diesel engines. There are only a few cars equiped with Europ 4 engines which is already outdated and replaced by Europ 5 in Europe last year. I don't see any hybrid cars running in Hong Kong. The irresponsible Hong Kong drivers (more than 90%) are put their car engines in idle for keeping the air conditioner on while parking in front of the parks, schools,  legislative building or government offices.

My personal opinion is that the US should apply solar and wind energy in the long run. I was amazingly watched TV about a while ago that the European and Japanese engineers are launchging hydrogen molecure engine to generate electricity to run the car and dumped out the water.

  10. automobiles contribute only slightly to next to nothing at all in global warming, their pollutions are dwarfed compared to other similar polluters

by the way, simply by using a mirrored surface that shines light at the planet/ground serves to add to global warming....

  11. gawd u kool aid drinkers cant see that global warming is FAKE al gore created the global warming and global cooling "theory" that barely any scientists agree on...the only places in the world that are rising in temperature is the places that dont use cars... have u been to africa? they dont have cars now do they?...there was an ice age before we came to existance do u think barney drove his SUV or hummer 2 around on a world tour? thought so...
